So I got an Amazon Kindle as an anniversary gift two weeks ago. I have been so busy playing with it and reading on it that I forgot to even mention how awesome it is.
Here is the first of many Kindle posts, the tech diva is pleased.
Since you may have already read all the reveiws or know the whole marketing scheme behind the kindle. I will just link to the site for those who have been under a rock for a while.
What I want to talk about is the total hack-ability of this thing. Contrary to all of the reveiws that I have read it’s a really cool device.
Things I like:
- The EVOD Whispernet Feature: I really like being able to go to a website and read the news on the bus, as well as some of the blogs I like. Contrary to what was reported this works just like any browser. You can go directly to URL’s and do not have to subscribe through the Amazon site for blogs. You can even use your Google Reader.
- The different formats you can use for books. I currently have some of the proprietary .AZW books on the Kindle, as well as .MOBI, .PRC and .txt. I was able to convert some PDF’s using the MobiPocket Creator (Publisher Edition). I was also able to convert old .lit (Microsoft Reader) files using ABC Amber Converter. Word documents and HTML files can also be converted easily to PRC or MOBI format.
- The font size adjuster: big font little font, whatever you want to see you can.
- Screen Saver: I totally passed out while reading Twilight, and woke up to a gorgeous picture of John Keats. The Kindle goes into sleep mode to save battery power.
- The battery life. Finally someone got this right. Its removable, replaceable and lasts a really long time.
- The screen and e-ink technology. I hate reading on the computer. I read on one all day and then go home to read large PDF’s for school on my bright laptop. Hate hate hate. Now all my school books are crisp clean, portable and I haven’t had a stress headache in over a week.
- The back cover is beautiful and has the same artwork as the lovely box that Kindle comes in
- SD Card. Need I say more.
- Transfer methods. SD Card (my laptop has an SD port which is an added bonus), USB connection, which is sort of nice, though it doesn’t recharge while plugged in, download from Whispernet, or through Feedbooks.com (more on feedbooks later), and lastly through email for FREE or for a small fee from Amazon.
Use: username@kindle.com for wireless delivery or name@free.kindle.com for free delivery to the e-mail address associated with your Amazon.com account.
Okay thats enough for now, next we will talk about what I don’t like about the Kindle as there are a few downsides.

Thinking about looking for one on eBay. Not sure I want to pay $359. Other than that, my interest is piqued.

what is good about this – I can do all of this on my laptop and it doesn’t look as awful as this hyped up bit of redundant junk.
